They\u2019re beautiful, serve as a free skating rink (about once every ten years) and give the city real character. At the same time, there are a few downsides. The bridges turn from picturesque photo opportunities into death traps when it snows. (Though admittedly, that also creates some good photo opportunities.)<\/p><p>They also create a bit of a rodent problem (hence all the cats). But the biggest problem of all is when things fall in. And a lot of things to do. About 35 cars go in per year, for example. The city has a special diving unit specifically to deal with them. They also pull out about 12,000(!) bicycles a year. And let\u2019s not forget about the drunks! A lot of them end up in the canals as well. Most often, just after they thought it was a good idea to pee off the sides (apparently if you pee standing up while inebriated you can get dizzy and tip forward).<\/p><p>And then there are the keys. We blame the lock makers. They make their locks finicky and put them exactly there where the risk of an accident is greatest. And so, most of us long-term residents have been there. You go to your bike on the bridge, try to unlock your bike, have a moment of butter fingers and whoops! Keys in the canal.<\/p><p>This happens so often that when Paap was out on his boat a little while ago and he saw a lady dangling a piece of string into the water with a desperate look on her face, he immediately knew she wasn\u2019t trying to catch fish.<\/p><p>He was right. Her keys were at the bottom and her bait was a magnet she\u2019d bought in a nearby shop. It was not proving to be up to the task.<\/p>\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" src=\"http:\/\/bookatour.amsterdam\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Instagram-met-hartlogo-compressed-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bookatour.amsterdam\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Instagram-met-hartlogo-compressed-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/bookatour.amsterdam\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Instagram-met-hartlogo-compressed-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bookatour.amsterdam\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Instagram-met-hartlogo-compressed-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/bookatour.amsterdam\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Instagram-met-hartlogo-compressed-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bookatour.amsterdam\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Instagram-met-hartlogo-compressed.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<h2>A series of crazy events<\/h2>\t\t\n\t\t<ul><li><b><\/b><b>Crazy thing one<\/b>: because Paap had seen this happen <i>so often<\/i> he actually had a powerful magnet for just such an occasion on board.<\/li><li><b><\/b><b>Crazy thing two<\/b>: Within a minute of using his magnet she found keys!\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><li><b><\/b><b>Crazy thing three<\/b>: They weren\u2019t hers! Somebody else had gotten unlucky and dropped their keys at exactly the same spot.<\/li><\/ul><p>Fortunately, the story has a happy ending. A few minutes later, she\u2019d found her own keys and got to keep going with her day. As for Paap, he got to walk away with the warm glow of being somebody\u2019s hero and he got a good story to boot! Not bad considering all it took was a string and a magnet, right?<\/p>\t\t\n\t\t\t<h2>So what should you do if you drop anything in?<\/h2>\t\t\n\t\t<p>Please don&#8217;t call us unless you&#8217;ve got a lot of time to wait! Though we really appreciate all of you reaching out, we are a touring company. That means our boats are often occupied and we can&#8217;t really interupt our tours to help you retrieve your keys. And as we&#8217;re often very busy, there&#8217;s a good chance we won&#8217;t be able to help! We&#8217;re so sorry!<\/p><p>Instead, try contacting the facebook group \u201cAmsterdam Durft te Vragen\u201d which translates to Amsterdam &#8216;dare to ask&#8217;. In this group, you&#8217;ll find many people who can help you out and might have a magnet handy! Of course, this will only work if there&#8217;s enough magnetic metal in the object you&#8217;ve lost. So, that won&#8217;t work for a phone. But if the object has enough metal, you could find somebody willing to help out in very little time indeed!\u00a0<\/p><p>If the object you&#8217;ve lost is very valuable to you (a suitcase full of cash or your partner) call the fire brigade! This is what one of our skippers did when he lost his wedding ring. They immediately got down there with their diving team and found it back for him.<\/p><p>Their number is <b>0900 0904<\/b><\/p><p>Apparently, they don\u2019t mind doing this, either! They see this as valuable exercise which helps them train for those times when they\u2019re working against the clock. So, if you lose something valuable don\u2019t be afraid to give them a call! Just make sure you remember <i>exactly <\/i>where it went in. Otherwise, with the water being as murky as it is, your chance for a happy ending will be much reduced.<\/p>\t\t\n\t\t\t<h2>When you should call us<\/h2>\t\t\n\t\t<p>When you want a tour! We&#8217;d love you to come aboard. And, who knows, we might be able to retrieve whatever you lost while you&#8217;re aboard our boat! Wouldn&#8217;t that be cool? And even if we don&#8217;t, we can tell you what else has fallen into the canals over the years (you&#8217;d be amazed).\u00a0<\/p><p>Of course, you don&#8217;t have to lose something to come aboard.
